With one previous lady owner, this 45 square-metre apartment in Lisbon had character in abundance, but needed to be rethought for modern living. A full reconfiguration removed a space-wasting corridor and old cloakroom to make way for a contemporary bathroom that celebrates the apartment's original pillars and curves, while the former bathroom became the living room. A central wooden cube, housing kitchen storage and appliances on one side and the TV and bookshelves on the other, now functionally anchors the open-plan. Throughout, the colour palette is drawn directly from the building's original blue and white Azuléjos tiles, keeping the apartment in respectful conversation with the city.

"The apartment in question is a one-bedroom property on the second floor of a 1940s building in the Penha de França neighbourhood with details that would make you fall in love with it: the doorbell, the old terrazzo in the hallway and on the stairs, and the wrought-iron banisters."
